Sun to Shade

This landscape was designed to unify the areas surrounding a newly installed driveway while responding to a range of distinct site conditions and light exposures. The garden begins with a raised planting area anchored by a flowering pear tree, creating a welcoming focal point near the entrance. From there, the design transitions into a low-maintenance, Southern California–inspired landscape featuring drought-tolerant plants, sculptural yuccas, and textural plant combinations that provide year-round interest with minimal water requirements. The final zone extends into a wooded hillside, where a naturalistic woodland planting scheme has been established to blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment while creating long-term privacy screening from the road beyond. Tree ferns and graceful weeping hemlocks lend a lush, layered character to the hillside, enhancing the sense of enclosure and providing a tranquil woodland atmosphere.
